Morrison-Talbott Library Internet Use Policy

The Morrison-Talbott Library (MTL) offers access to the Internet in order to expand the Library's collection of informational, educational, and recreational materials and to provide its users with an opportunity to explore the rapidly developing universe of online electronic resources. The Library does not charge for Internet access. Charges are assessed for printing materials or to purchase a disk to save materials. The Morrison-Talbott Library is not an e-mail provider.

Accuracy of Information:

Users of the Internet at the Morrison-Talbott Library should be aware that most resources available via the Internet and other electronic information networks are "global" resources rather than "local" resources. The Morrison-Talbott Library does not and can not control the information content obtained from outside sources via the Internet. Library users must keep the following points in mind when evaluating the information obtained via the Internet:

  • Information obtained via the Internet may not be accurate and may not be obtained from a reliable source.
  • Information obtained via the Internet may not be current.
  • Links to information on the Internet may not always be valid, and particular information sites on the Internet may sometimes be unavailable. This unavailability often occurs unpredictably, and the Library has no control over it.
  • Certain information obtained via the Internet may be considered controversial by some Library patrons.

The Morrison-Talbott Library urges Library patrons to be informed consumers and carefully evaluate information obtained via the Internet.

The Morrison-Talbott Library is not responsible for monitoring the sites visited on the Internet, nor is the Library responsible for damages, indirect or direct, arising from a Library patron's use of Internet information sources.

Patron Assistance and Instruction:

Library staff may provide assistance to patrons in the use of the Internet as time and staff knowledge permits. Online documentation is available on point of service. Formal instruction may be available at scheduled times.

Use of Equipment and Networks:

Morrison-Talbott Library patrons are required to use the Internet within the guidelines of acceptable use. The following activities are UNACCEPTABLE:

  • use of the Internet for any purpose which results in the harassment of other users
  • behaving in a manner that is disruptive to other users, including, but not limited to the display of offensive visual or audio material
  • overuse of computer equipment which serves to deny access to other users. Usage is limited to 30 minutes, when other patrons are waiting to access the Internet
  • accessing Games, Chat Rooms, Bulletin Boards or Instant Message Services
  • destruction of, damage to or unauthorized alteration of the Library's computer equipment, software, or network security procedures, which includes downloading to the computer's hard drive. Downloading to the printer or to a patron's disk in drive A: is acceptable. Disks may be purchased at the Library.
  • use of the Internet in any way which violates a Federal or State law
  • use of electronic information networks accessed via the Internet in any way which violates licensing and payment agreements between the Morrison-Talbott Library and network/database providers
  • unauthorized duplication of copyright protected software or violation of software license agreements
  • violation of system security

The Morrison-Talbott Library is not an e-mail provider. The Morrison-Talbott Library reserves the right to limit or prohibit access to the Internet or the Library's network at the discretion of the Librarian on duty.
